What Future Self Are You Consigning Yourself To?

Dan Beverly

It’s a useful thought to consider the Future Self you’d love to live into. But that desired future self is not who we’ll become, unless we get conscious and intentional about it – something we rarely do.

So, a more penetrating thought to consider is: What Future Self are you currently consigning yourself to?

Think back over the last working week. Take a look at your calendar. Your notes. Your journal. Remind yourself where you’ve been, who you’ve been with, what you’ve been working on and what you’ve achieved.

What are your choices, decisions, actions and achievements SIGNALLING to yourself about who you are and who you are becoming? What have you SELF-SIGNALLED about your commitments, your priorities, your values and your capabilities? And does all of that add-up to the future self you desire to be?

If not … how does your current M.O. contradict that desired future self? What thoughts have your caught in the autopilot of those contradictions? And what would your Desired Future Self have to say to the you of today about the changes required?

We spend a lot of time, energy and THOUGHT caught in the illusion of being defined by our past. But far more accurate (and helpful!) to notice our future is shaped by our present.

Take some time this week to clarify your thoughts on your Desired Future Self. And to eradicate the contradictions that are currently consigning you to something other than your best (future) self.
