Wanting to Change vs. Wanting the Change

Dan Beverly

Wanting to change is not yet committed. Wanting the change is.

It’s easy for us to want to change. To say we want to change. We’ll tell anyone who’ll listen (including ourselves) how keen we are to make a change, do things differently, install a new habit, commit to a new practice. “I really want to … it’s just never quite been the right moment” Or some other slew of reasons why the change (which I really want to make happen, honest) hasn’t yet happened.

But contrast that sense of Wanting to Change with Wanting the Change. A subtle but game-changing distinction between thoughts stuck in the non-committal dream space of process (Wanting to Change). Versus thoughts representing a staunch commitment to the end result (Wanting the Change).

When you notice your thoughts are all for Wanting to Change, wake-up to the fact that you’re fearful of the (perceived) hardship of the process. Wake-up to the fact that this is still a vague, dreamy longing with no serious commitment (yet) attached. Wake-up to the fact that you haven’t yet made the DECISION to create positive change – something that comes only when you shift to Wanting the Change.

When your thoughts SHIFT to Wanting the Change – complete clarity and focus on your target and an unwavering attachment to it – you’ll transcend the excuses of merely Wanting to Change.

To create that shift to Wanting the Change: spend time visualising and connecting with the end result you want. Get clear on it. Get excited about it. Why it’s good. What it’ll mean. Celebrate what it’ll do and what it’ll lead to. Imagine having it now. How that’ll feel. What that’ll be like.

If you’re serious about achieving the next thing for you, you’ll work on Wanting the Change. If you’re secretly comfortable to avoid the next think, you’ll stick with Wanting to Change.
