100% Commitment is Easier
A Quality of Thought: “100% Commitment is Easier”.
Commitment is a superpower available to all of us.
And not one of us has to think too hard to know that to be true. A quick survey of the recent past and we’ll be able to recall a situation in which full-throated commitment was required; we decided to commit (noticing our highest self understands that commitment and decision are the same thing); and we achieved a significant outcome.
Our commitment was always there. We could call on it. And when we did, it was unstoppable – which is to say: we were unstoppable.
That’s a useful point of reflection, especially since we so often forget that commitment need not be reserved for the crisis that it usually takes for us to call on it. We can decide any time; and we can apply it to any project.
Here’s an even-more-useful thought for any moment in which our commitment threatens to elude us:
100% commitment is EASIER than anything less.
Even versus 99% commitment, 100% commitment is easier. Why? Because 99% commitment (and anything less) carries all the burden of the commitment work, but minus the energising input of the commitment decision.
Test this for yourself. Choose a reasonably-sized goal and imagine what 99% commitment to it looks and feels like. It’s overly-complicated. It’s sorta doing it, sorta not. It’s putting in lots of work, but then retreating at the pivotal moments. It’s trying (in all senses of the word!).
Contrast these thoughts with those of being 100% committed. They’re easier! The thinking is clearer. The decisions are made. The actions happen. In all: there is a freedom to my work on this project.
So, a new rule … Where I am 100% Committed: this is a project ready to execute. Where I am 99% Committed (or anything less): this is a project not ready, with pre-work and decisions still to be taken. Until then, let it go.
A final thought: what to do with those projects and goals that are strong potentials, but don’t yet have my 100% commitment? Find the mini-experiment that will get you to a (100% or NO) commitment decision – and commit 100% to that next step.
