Never Send an Email

Dan Beverly

A Quality of Thought: “Never Send an Email”

Ok, so perhaps I don’t mean literally NEVER send an email. I just wanted to introduce a bit of drama to wake us all up. To what? Our overreliance on email. And so, in stark contrast to the world in which we live: introduce this rule to your working day:

Never send an email when a call is a possibility.

And better yet, add to that: never make a call when an in-person meeting is a possibility.

Conversation and connection are overwhelmingly more fruitful than email exchanges can ever be. And of course, we know that. But in the moment, push the thought out of our mind.

And of course, there are times when email is the better choice. But how often? 10% of the time? Maximum, I would say. Yet we’ve got the numbers reversed, sending an email in 90% of our communication opportunities.

No wonder our success is so slow to materialise.

We know most of the reasons why email is often not the best choice. But here’s another:

We don’t relax into the reading of an email in the same way we relax into a conversation. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Email is something to get through. To get rid of. I just want it dealt with, off my list and out of my inbox.

Why would I ever want my communications to drop into a space where the recipient just wants rid of it?

Never send an email when a call is a possibility.

Experiment with this for a week – see what it does for you. Your relationships. Your communication skill. And your ultimate success.

want to talk more?

If you’re thinking about coaching as an option, why don’t we schedule a call, have a brief chat and see where you’re at?

No canned pitch or hard sell. Just honest conversation and a new connection made. And at a time that suits you best.
