Your Commitments Are Lived

Dan Beverly

Your level of commitment shows up in LIFE. Take a look at your calendar. Take a look at your emails. Notice who you’re talking to and the kinds of conversations you’re having. Notice what you’re saying yes to and what you’re saying no to. Take note of where you’re spending your time, money and energy. Those are your commitments.

Your commitments are lived.

Why is this important and how is it useful? Because commitment (which, as any casual observation of any top performer will show, is a DECISION) is the MOST important ingredient to achieving anything, personal or professional.

If used properly.

Most people do not make good use of their commitment. At least, not for the things they say they want.

Choose a goal. Think of it now. And if I ask you: “On a scale of 1 – 10, what’s your commitment level?” the vast majority of people (and perhaps you, too) won’t hesitate to say 10/10. Because it would be a dissonance to say “I have this goal” and “my commitment is a 2”.

(When I ask a new client this question, I don’t just get 10/10 as the answer. I get the slightly indignant facial expression, too. As if to say: “Why are you even asking? I’ve told you … it’s my goal. So obviously it’s a 10.)

But really? 10/10 for commitment? No you’re not! We say we are. But our choices, behaviours and actions say something very different. And it’s not useful or effective for us to convince ourselves (in language only) that we’re 10/10 on the commitment scale.

Better to do this …

(1) Use a review of the last 7 days to educate you on your own commitment level.

(2) Start each day with the journal prompt: “If I were 10/10 for commitment today, what would that look like?”

That’ll give you clarity on where you’re at. And what your next (committed) action is.
