You Talk Too Much

A Quality of Thought: “You Talk Too Much”

Not many people have said these words to me, over the years; but only because most people I know are far too polite to say. I definitely can be (am!) guilty of this.

But not (we would hope) in my coaching sessions, where the ratio of listening to speaking is something in the order of 90/10. And in that predominant listening mode, I’ve become keenly aware of how we all talk too much.

We’re habitually verbose; and through little more than a laziness of thought and communication finesse.

This habit of ours we maintain to the significant detriment of our attention, clarity and focus. Rambling on doesn’t just distract and confuse our listener; we distract and confuse ourselves!

Because all communication is also self-communication.

The antidote? Set yourself a communications challenge to be succinct. To take a considered moment before speaking; and then delivering a crisp, clear communication, replete with precision and depth.

It’ll do wonders for your Quality of Thought.
