Judge Your Thoughts. Not Your Actions.

Dan Beverly

This sounds like we have it backwards. Surely we judge on what we actually do, not just what we think and say we will?

And judging thoughts? That sounds like a troublesome road! After all, we can have some pretty warped thoughts. (Or is that just me? Was that an overshare? Whoops. Quick, let’s move on …)

Most of us fear judgement. And our harshest critic is almost always ourselves. And the focus of that criticism is almost always ACTION.

I should have done that. I shouldn’t have done that. I didn’t do that. But I did do that – and it failed. And I don’t do that – but I should do.

And on.

Take a moment now to notice how much of your thought is self-judgement. And how much of that self-judgement is levelled at your actions and inactions. Doing and having. Not doing and not having.

And now ask yourself: What about the thinking? Because those actions and behaviours are the product of THOUGHT. It’s those that would benefit from the kind of scrutiny only your actions are getting, thus far.

Judge your thoughts. Not your actions. (And certainly not yourself.)
