You’re Not Good at 20 Things

Dan Beverly

Well, you probably are good at 20 things. But if I challenge you to tell me what you’re *really* good at and where you need to spend the vast majority (+80%) of your time on, the list isn’t 20 things. It’ll be more like 3 things.

You’re not good at 20 things. You’re good at 3 things.

Almost everything else is a distraction. And whilst it’ll seem like the answer to greater productivity, performance and success is to get that list of things long and strong, focused subtraction is the key.

Because in subtraction is simplicity. And in simplicity is power. Like a magnifying glass held steady in the sun.

Simplicity is not easy. It takes a certain fearlessness to subtract. Far more comfortable – but far less performant – to add.

So, know that when you’re looking to add, you’re not working on your productivity, performance or success. You’re succumbing to a fear.

Challenge the thought behind the fear. Simplify – like your life depended on it! And enjoy the outstanding returns of calm, focused and repetitive attention, doing the 3 things we’re *really* good at.

Dan.

p.s. If you’re a leader: think of your team. Think of their 3 things. What do you need to support them to subtract?
