What actions are you linking pleasure and pain to?
I’m asking because the brain really only has one organising principle: to move us away from pain and towards pleasure. Threat vs. Reward. And it’s useful to know that.
Because when we’re stuck in paralysis and inaction. Or when we’re stuck in unintended autopilot action. Or when we’re deceiving ourselves with positive procrastination. Our pleasure/pain associations are mixed up and not serving our best interests.
Instead: find the pleasure of massive intentional action; and the pain of procrastinating inaction. Redistribute your pleasure/pain associations – with just the power of your thinking! Here’s the recipe.
- Become Aware of the associations you’re making.
- Challenge those associations as outmoded ways of thinking.
- Assume the Power to redistribute those associations.
And never again let confused associations get in the way of your goals.
