Whatever your day-to-day working pursuit – whether you’re leading teams, delivering projects, creating change or building a business – there is work that really moves you forward. And there’s work that does not.
And we know the difference.
We know what our high-return activities are. We know what our low-return activities are. We know what our no-return activities are.
And we know the difference. Yet we act like we don’t.
All sorts of things get in the way. And we know what they are. So let’s not dwell on that. Instead, let’s keep this really simple. Focus only on Action #1. And then ask the question.
How powerfully is this moving me forward?
Think about the goal: where you want to get to. How does this action play into that higher purpose?
The brain loves numbers. So give it a rating on a scale of 1 – 10: 1 being not moving you forward at all; 10 being a powerful step forward towards your goal.
- 1 – 3: forget it! Take another action.
- 4 – 6: time for an upgrade. What can you add to your action?
- 7 – 9: getting there. What can we do to make this a 10?
- 10: now we’re talking! Let’s get started!
There is a world of difference between output and outcome. Between activity and action. Know the difference by asking the question: how powerfully is this moving me forward?
